As the European release of Senran Kagura Burst draws near, the publisher sent out a trailer to explain the game. They felt people didn’t really understand what this Nintendo 3DS was about, so they cut up a 30-second trailer to reach out to the uninitiated. Here it is.
I don’t know about you, but that’s exactly what I understood the game was about. You fight things in fetishized schoolgirl fantasies and then they get naked and jiggle around a bit for your amusement. I’ve got a review copy right now that I need to go through, but I’m still mentally preparing myself.
It’s not hard to understand that probably more than a fair share of people will be put off by this gameplay mechanism of ripping up outfits for objectified women to add to your power. Still, it’s oddly commendable of Senran Kagura Burst to market itself with such overt objectification, against all odds. It stares backlash in the boobs face and laughs. That’s what I’m currently keeping in mind, before I delve in and give this one a chance. Really, strip away the sexism and it sounds like the brawler has a good idea of how to balance risk and reward. That, at least, sounds interesting.
As to supposedly enlightening audiences to what the game’s about: I think everyone was already well on board with that, but alright.
Senran Kagura Burst releases on Nintendo 3DS this week for Europe. You’ll need over thirteen thousand free blocks, if you’re downloading it digitally; just throwing that out there.
