After staying in limbo for some time, Way of the Samurai 4 is finally releasing on PC through Steam soon. In preparation of the release date on July 23, have about 20 minutes of preview gameplay from the PC port, which you’ll find below.
Way of the Samurai 4 is an open-world action game akin to Shenmue, set in the changing times of a traditional Japan and the otherworldly influence of British colonialism. As a no-name samurai, the player is in charge of carving their own story inside this world. This can be done through spontaneous quests or by opting to help out one of three conflicting factions in the region. Since multiple branches can be explored, the game has multiple endings to unlock and a bunch of different paths to choose.
During fights, you’ll be able to use a set of different weapons and masteries. Slain foes can drop loot, though there is also a wanted level for those who resort to theft. Way of the Samurai 4 has some subtle blends with open-world paragons like Grand Theft Auto, with some quirky humor to boot.
Since the game is set on replay value, the gameplay commentary below starts right after the game’s tutorial section, in which the factions are introduced. Optional missions and shops are shown, as well as a story mission and a random event.
Way of the Samurai 4 will be out on July 23, 2015. Currently, publisher Ghostlight has put up preorders for the game at a generous 40% discount, which brings the game down to 13,79€, from the usual price of €22.99.
